Big Bash AC vs James Maude Ac Holmedale 13.4.2019

Massive warm welcome awaited us at Holmedale as our team drifted in. Unfortunately we were a man down but the spirit of the Big bash team would still compete and take things as they come.

Good to see Dave Fox back with the team and a massive BB welcome back to James Staff

Nick Turpin collecting funds, Billy H organising names and Paul overseeing matters to ensure all was going well.
BB peg envelope selected by Glen and then team captains recorded peg names then the short drive to the lake.
There have been some decent weights recorded in the opens of late as the carp wake up and build up food stores before spawning season commences. Things were looking up for the match however 2 nights of frost would impact our dreams of exceptional weights. To cap this off there was a wind blowing up the lake which took the temperature down a further notch or two. This made field side pegs the ones everyone wanted as they got the sun whilst the roadside guys shivered in the shade of the trees.

Peg 34 for me today (road side) with Mr Wiggin's to my left and Dave Lilliman to my right. Shaun Green and Nick Heath opposite so banter would be regular throughout the day.
2 x top 2+2 lines, a top 2 + 4 line and margin to my left then bomb to aerator was the plan. Three toots of the whistle and Shaun set off with a carp first chuck on his feeder rod, good start. With the sun blazing on the guys opposite they were having a lot more success than the roadside. Half an hour in and bomb rod whipped round and fish on. The match panned out with not one fish of pole lines, 3 bites with 15 minutes to go but on lifting up nothing there. I ended up with about 8 carp on bomb rod, hard pellet and corn the baits that I was lucky to connect with. I guess this must be a Holemdale record for me as well as not one lost fish, but 21.11 was the weight so you can see the stamp of fish.

Shaun caught off and on all match, nothing consistent but he took advantage of his corner peg to win the section, well done mate. Nick didn't have as many fish but the quality made up for the amount as there were some proper lumps extracted on his trusty pole with the skills he collects everyone's pegging fees. The rose between two thorns was James Staff who caught on pole and feeder for a respectable 37-5 considering he hasn't been fishing for a long time.

Lots of guys struggled for bites as the fish were not too interested in feeding full stop. If the fish are not interested then there is little you can do. Everyone stuck to the task in hand is a credit to all in the cold weather and the result reflects in the days weights.
Best bite of the day at our end of the lake has to be when a seat box safe working load was mentioned, no names mentioned but a proper wrap round to signal the bite.

Whistle blown for time and roadside weighing in assisted by Scott Dibble, much appreciated then off to the pub for a much welcome warm, pint and pie, peas and chips curtesy of James Maude AC whilst scores on the doors were worked out.

Match winner JM Pete Lambert 46-13
Second JM Shaun Green 44-14
Third JM Tony Smith 42-0
Section winners BB Mick Roche 16-1
BB Steve Curtis 35-14
JM Nick Heath 39-9
JM Phil Smedley 32-7
BB Glen Haynsz 34-1
Match points JM 52, BB 53.

Great team effort from the Bashers considering a man down and all to fight for later in the year.
Many thanks to James Maude for their hospitality once again. To Billy and Paul for the matches organisation and everyone who makes these matches special. This includes those unable to fish with us for various reasons as they push the team members in our club matches every week improving everyone's skills.

JAMES MAUDE AC v BIG BASH AC 1st Leg
Saturday 13th April 2019
SHERWOOD FOREST FISHERY HOLMEDALE LAKE

Weather: Frosty start to the day with over temps of -2, very cold North Easterly winds.

The beast from the East was nothing compared to today's Bees on the knees as the pollinators created an atomic dust cloud that signalled their arrival at Holmedale.
The ritual of the JamBig handshakes signalled the start of another two club friendship for yet another year. Get well soon Kevin Webster was the cry as the BB boys were a man down as names were ticked of the wanted list with our trusty Nick Turpin Heath, honing his skills extracting the Queens shilling from the palms of itching hands as the draw bag awaits. Big thanks to Nick for his assistance, Hon Sec Skelly always there to put his experience with paperwork which was much appreciated. All the necessary out the way it was not so Big Glen to step forward and select the no expense spared Vellum envelopes containing the all important alternating peg numbers, draw bags drawn and those itching hands delved deeply to retrieve the folded peg numbers as each team captain cross referenced the numbers. Holmedale can throw up some astonishing weights from anywhere on the lake so it was pot luck were ever you had drawn. So just as the Holmedale dust had settled the vehicles meandered to their destination creating once again what resembled a nuclear fallout.
With overnight temperatures dropping to -2c today was going to be a tough one, not only because of the weather but a pressured lake with twenty nine anglers on it. This long standing fixture in both clubs History has produced some epic battles over the years, but this one has to go down as the coldest we have ever fished as strong North Easterly winds hampered presentation with the BB boy's bringing the cold weather from upt North as the Game Of Throws saw that Winter was coming.

Bank side was the place to be with sun cream on side trays as the roadside lads dug deep into the wardrobes for more thermal clothing, was this to reveal that the fish preferred the bank side sunshine as six of the top weights came from there.
Pete Lambert (James Maude) fished a solid match in howling conditions making long pole impossible, nothing taken on the tip so it was a close in attack after two hours with very little to show for his efforts, Pete took it up a notch as his margin swim kick in and his two plus three lines started to produce and with a well earned 46lb-13oz from peg six. Well done Pete. Second place went to Shaun Green (James Maude) pegged bank side 28, Shaun took advantage of the open water to his lefthand side making the tip work in his favour taking a respectable 44lb-14oz to the weigh bag. Well done Shaun. Bank side sunshine saw Tony Smith (James Maude) pegged on two, Tony battled with windy conditions to join the 40lb club taking third place with 42lb. Well done Tony. With three section winners coming off the bank side, Nick Heath (James Maude) 39lb-9oz peg 24, Steve Curtis (Big Bash) 35lb-14oz peg 22, Mick Roache (Big Bash) 16lb-1oz peg 12, and two section on the roadside went to Phil Smedley (James Maude) 32lb-7oz peg 42, Glen Haynzs (Big Bash) 34lb-1oz peg 55, Well done all section winners.

A massive well done to the rest of the anglers that suffered aching bones due to arctic conditions for six hours, your dedication to the sport is commendable.
For most the best bite of the day was the Pie,Peas & Chips with gravy in the warm surrounding of the Dukeries Hostelry.
A big thank you to all participants, my trusty helpers and well done to all the packet pickers.
